Gestures of Note –This artwork emerged from the first Taxi Hand Signs book published in South Africa in 2007. South Africa has a taxi system that uses hand signs that commuters and taxi drivers employ to indicate desired destinations. The book was the first major attempt to document the signs and their destinations. Included in the book was a tactile shape language for blind people. Taxi Hand Signs for the Blind was published in 2009 and launched at Museum Africa.
Gestures of Noteis a digital compilation on Hahnemuhle – German Etching paper. A1(841mm x 594mm). The images are sourced from the series of unique gouache paintings. Each taxi hand sign is painted on Shoellershammer 4R in Sizes A2 and some on half A2.
The second Taxi Hand Signs book, which included a map designed in London underground style, was published in 2010 and launched at the Standard Bank Art Gallery together with the taxi hand signs stamps (the artwork became the content of the South African National Commemorative Stamp in January 2010).
