TEDxJohannesburg - Susan Woolf - 11/15/09

"Zaps and other Signs" Susan Woolf, social fine artist, takes the audience on an adventure, a ride in the vehicle of taxi hand signs. In South Africa, millions of people catch rides in min-taxis, using signs that indicate to the driver where they are going. Until now, no one had documented the signs or their routes. Susan tells the story of an artist in Gauteng learning the story of unspoken communication and the discoveries of history, innovation and uniqueness expressed almost unknowingly by millions of people, every day. Her work was launched in a book for blind people last year, a booklet for sighted people on 29 January 2010 and is now commemorated in the 2010 National South African Stamp.
